IIDC Conference Write-Up
I think that the conference went very well. I was part of the registration team and we had no problems at all on the day of the event. We had four people at the registration table to guarantee that no person would have to wait in a line to register. We had some people show up that did not register but we had enough open seats that all we had to do was write their name down and let them in.
I enjoyed listening to each of the speakers. I liked how Josh added humor into his talk and didn't keep it extremely serious. However, I would have liked to hear him talk more about projects that he really enjoyed instead of ones that he did not like - and work that he wasn't proud of.
I really liked how Justin responded when asked the question, "What trait should designers have other than the ability to design?" Justin responded by saying, "Be able to articulate why you are different and why you are the better person for the job." This answer is a great answer and I feel can really help me in the future when going on job interviews.
Aaron's speech was a little boring to me at times because he was talking a lot about coding terms - which I wasn't really familiar with. However, I really liked how he talked about how he becomes inspired and his process of finding inspiration. I thought his cardboard bed was fascinating.
The one thing that really stuck with me from Bobby's talk was the story of the plumber. It cost $200 to tighten a nut - $5 to actually tighten it - $195 to know which nut to tighten. He told us that he wants all of us to be the $200 nut tightener. I thought that was a really great analogy. That almost everybody can design something - but it takes knowledge to know how to design it correctly. I also really liked Bobby's panel answer when he said to never take/decline your first job because of the money. At that point, you don't know what you will want, so don't decline a job because you feel you aren't getting paid enough - at least it's a job.

Week 13 Outside of Class
This weekend I finished my third article.
I really like how this article turned out. Each of the pictures has multiple pictures that it will animate through - like a slideshow.

Week 13B
Today in class we had all of class to work on our layouts. I was told to be more adventurous with my layouts and add angles or something. So this is what I played around with.
I also added the "Click to view video" blurb on each page of the Popular 5k article.

Week 13 Outside of Class
Outside of class I figured out how to get my videos working. Each one works on the viewer on my desktop and the iPad. I also played around with the videos and placed one in as my own video instead of a link to YouTube. I got that one to work also. All the videos still aren't perfect and I still have to play around with some of the options but I was just glad that I finally got them working.
Week 13A
Today in class we did a round robin of critiquing. Then we had the rest of class to work on our third article.

Week 12 Outside of Class
This weekend I finished my articles. My first article is pretty much finished so I didn't do anything to it. I did change my Popular 5ks article though.
I also fixed my Strawberry Shortcake layouts.
I moved some pictures around and resized them to give more white space on the pages. I also got my videos to work in Adobe Viewer - they don't show up correctly in InDesign but work when you click on them in the Viewer. I also linked each of the "Register Here" buttons to the 5k's website. For some reason not all of them work correctly.
I also fixed my Strawberry Shortcake layouts.
I brought the scale in front of the pink border, added two cake pieces onto the scale, and added a number onto the scale.
All I did on this page was flip the flour scoop so it was facing the text instead of facing away from it.

Week 12B
Today in class Pannafino did a demo on some of the interactions we could use. Then the rest of the class was in class work time. Pannafino told me that I need more white space on my layouts. I struggled to change my layout because I have been working on them so long that I have become attached to the way I had it. This is something I tried.
I don't know if I exactly like it but I'm trying.

Week 12A
Today in class we critiqued some peoples' articles.
Then we had the rest of class to work on our current articles. In class I tried once again to get my videos to work but I failed. Then I added little embellishments to the bottoms of my pages.

Week 11 Outside of Class
This weekend I finished my second article. The only thing that needed to be done was the horizontal and vertical screens of the cover page.
I didn't fix or change anything on my other pages.

Week 11B
Today in class I worked on my second article.
I added the horizontal layouts for each of the pages. I also added a "Register Here" button to each page. I want the buttons to take viewers to the websites of each 5k. I spent a lot of time trying to link the buttons to the websites but for some reason could not get by layouts to preview. I also looked up tutorials and videos on how to add links and place videos into my layouts. I couldn't find anything to fix my problem.
